What is social proof and why does it increase conversions?

People follow people
When we are unsure what to do, we look at what others are doing. That is social proof, and it is one of the strongest forces in buying decisions.
On a website it answers the silent questions every new visitor has: Is this legit? Do other people actually buy this? Will it work for someone like me?
The main types
- Activity – "Anna from Berlin bought the Pro plan 5 minutes ago."
- Popularity – "1,284 people signed up this week."
- Live presence – "23 people are viewing this page right now."
- Reviews and testimonials – real words from real customers, with a name and a face.
Where to use it
- Pricing page – the moment of doubt. Recent purchases and testimonials work best here.
- Product pages – live visitors and review popups.
- Signup forms – a counter of recent signups lowers the perceived risk.
- Checkout – a short testimonial next to the payment button.
Keep it honest
Only show real events. Fake numbers are easy to spot, can break consumer-protection laws and destroy the trust you are trying to build. Connect your store, your forms or your payment provider and let the data speak.
